Vikingland Band Festival - Alexandria | June 28, 2026

The Waconia Marching Band wrapped up its competitive parade season on a high note at the Vikingland Band Festival in Alexandria, Minnesota, earning 2nd Place in the AAAA Class and taking home the Best Wind Section award!

Congratulations to all of the students, directors, and volunteers on an outstanding season filled with hard work, dedication, and memorable performances.

Harry Wenger Festival - Owatonna | June 20, 2026

The Waconia Marching Band delivered an outstanding, award-winning performance at the Harry Wenger Marching Band Festival in Owatonna on June 20. Competing in the AAA Division, the band earned 1st Place overall and was also recognized with the Best Hornline Award, highlighting the musicians' exceptional skill, dedication, and hard work. Congratulations to all the students, directors, and supporters on this impressive achievement!

Rhythm on the Rum Parade – Milaca | June 18, 2026

The Waconia Marching Band had an incredible night at the Rhythm on the Rum Parade in Milaca, sweeping the Class AAA awards and earning:

Waconia Marching Band Takes 1st Place at Foley Fun Days Parade

The Waconia Marching Band proudly earned 1st Place at the Foley Fun Days Parade on June 17, 2026, delivering an outstanding performance that showcased the talent, dedication, and hard work of its student musicians and directors.

Competing against bands from across the region, Waconia impressed judges and spectators alike with its musical excellence, precision marching, and spirited performance. The first-place finish is a testament to the countless hours of practice and commitment demonstrated by the students throughout the season.

Congratulations to all members of the Waconia Marching Band on this outstanding accomplishment. We look forward to building on this success and continuing to make our community proud throughout the year.

The Waconia Marching Band (WMB), proudly known as “Big Black,” is a competitive street marching band made up of nearly 150 dedicated student musicians. Founded in 1971, WMB has been a cornerstone of the Waconia community for more than five decades and remains a consistent top performer at competitions across Minnesota and throughout North America.

More than just a band, WMB is committed to excellence both on and off the street. Our mission is to inspire superior marching performance while developing character, discipline, teamwork, and a lifelong appreciation for music. Through rigorous rehearsal, high standards, and shared pride, students grow not only as musicians, but as leaders.

WMB also proudly supports the Junior Marching Band, a program designed to introduce younger students to the traditions and excitement of marching band. The Junior Band builds strong fundamentals, confidence, and camaraderie—preparing students for future success in Big Black while allowing them to experience the joy of performing for the community.

Established by director James Thulien, the Waconia High School Marching Band has celebrated 54 years—and counting—of excellence. Generations of talented students have carried on a legacy of outstanding performances, community pride, and the unmistakable spirit of Big Black.

Marching Band Volunteer Coordinators

Marching Band Coordinator Volunteer positions provide essential support to the overall success of the band program. Coordinators assist with organization, communication, and event support throughout the season, working closely with the Band Directors. Information about signing up to volunteer will be communicated by the Band Directors in early spring.
